A Coach You’ve Probably Never Heard of – Bob Milloy

Bob Milloy is the Head Coach of Good Counsel High School in Olney, MD. In his 42 years as a head coach – at four different high schools – his overall record is 365-106-1. Last fall Good Counsel won their third straight Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title with a 12-0 record. Milloy also has eight state championships, coached 28 different teams ranked in the Washington Post’s top 20 and has the most wins of any active coach in the state of Maryland.

After graduating from Maryland, Milloy became the junior varsity coach at DeMatha High School. He then went on to Whitman High School and later coached at two other Maryland high schools – Sherwood and Springbrook – before taking over the Good Counsel program in 2001. Since that time, 87 of his players have gone on to play college football.

What’s impressive about last fall’s undefeated team was that it included wins over highly regarded Manatee High School in Bradenton, FL, Delaware’s Red Lion Academy, Valley Forge Military Academy, and the Gilman School in Baltimore.

Last weekend, Good Counsel lost their 2012 opener as perennial power Bishop Gorman (NV) defeated the Falcons, 27-22, in a nationally televised game.

What separates Milloy from many coaches is his complete preparation and attention to detail. “One of the elements to his success besides his obvious knowledge of football is that he outworks everybody,” said Good Counsel Athletic Director Mark Jankovitz. “In his game preparation, he tries to cover every detail and I know the team and coaches spend numerous hours throughout the week on game preparation. Like a chess game, they’re weeks and weeks ahead. They’ve been talking about specific scenarios and certain games all the way back to the summer.”
