PISTOL-FLEX MISCONCEPTION: CAN’T SCORE QUICKLY IF BEHIND LATE IN GAME

One of the keys in the overall Pistol-Flex philosophy is for the offense to be able to take as much time off the clock as possible.  Remember, the Pistol-Flex Triple Option Offense is a run-oriented, wear the defense down type of offense.  Having said that, many “experts” in the coaching world criticize offenses such as the Pistol-Flex for what they believe to be its failure to be a “come from behind” type of offense.  This could not be further from the truth!  A quick look at Georgia Tech’s “scoring drives” over the last couple of years shows that they were a very quick scoring offense on many occasions.  Sure, GT also had many long drives that took time off the clock but when all is said and done, whether a team primarily runs the ball or throws it, it all comes down to one intangible: EXECUTION!  Can your offense execute the called play?  Every football play that has ever been drawn up, if run properly, is designed for success.   Remember, football comes down to two things:  blocking and tackling…whichever team does better at both of those things, will win the game!  So, if we run our base Veer play properly with precise blocking angles, the play will have tremendous success.  On some drives, we may be able to get our A-back to the periphery and score a quick TD.  On other drives, we will also score a TD, only this time, it may take us 17 plays!

Next time when someone mocks triple option football by stating that it is not a quick scoring offense, show them a stat sheet from the last two seasons at Georgia Tech.  Who knows, maybe they will learn something new!
