THE IDEAL PISTOL-FLEX A-BACK

Every type of offensive philosophy (strategy) requires certain “traits” in the players who will be required to execute the offense.  The Pistol-Flex is no different!  Each position within the greater Pistol-Flex philosophy requires a particular skill set for the offense to run like a well-oiled machine.  However, having said that, it should be noted at this time that the Pistol-Flex is the great equalizer when it comes to offensive strategy!  The standards that we require of our players are not as high as the standards that are needed in other offensive packages.  Why?  Because of our scheme.  You see, the Pistol-Flex needs the smaller, quicker linemen.  We want the undersized B-back.  We welcome the athletic QB who does not have the necessary arm strength to start on most college teams.  Please, send us your undersized, under-rated, and “cast-off” players.  As long as their attitudes are healthy, we will make them stars.

This week, I would like to breakdown what qualities we look for in our A-backs.  Above all, our A-backs must be “quick”.  When I say “quick”, I do not necessarily mean 4.4/40 speed!   What I mean is “explosive”.  Indeed!  These guys must be able to accelerate from a stand still, to full speed with all due diligence.   They must be able to get to their assigned area (in pitch relationship) as quickly as possible.  So, explosiveness is indeed a priority when looking for an A-back within this offense.  In addition, the A-back must have an “attitude”.  We want them to be fearless!  They are undersized to begin with so as that LB is pursuing them in order to make the tackle, our A-back must not be intimidated.  Instead, he must have an attacking mindset that will enable him to play (and run) aggressively. The Pistol-Flex A-back must also be able to block (either a LB or secondary defender) as they will be expected to perform these all important blocks on many occasions throughout the course of a game.  The A-back must also have good hands.  Not necessarily as a pass receiver (though that helps), rather, as the pitch back who MUST secure that pitch no matter how bad the toss is from the QB.  Remember, if that ball is pitched to the A-back, it is a LIVE BALL!  There is no room for fumbling on this team!  The final trait that we look for in our A-backs (and in every other positional player on the team) is HEART.  We need them to possess the heart of a lion, the heart of a winner, and the heart of a “teammate”…..remember, there is no “I” in TEAM!
