USING YOUR QB AS ANOTHER RUNNING BACK

There are many triple option coaches who do NOT want their QB to be the ball carrier in their offense.  I do not agree with his philosophy.  It is my opinion that your QB should ALWAYS be one of the best (if not the BEST) running back on offense.  I want to have the ball in the hands of my BEST athlete on every play…in this case, that would be my QB.  On the pitch option phase of the triple, I teach my QBs to attack that pitch key defender….make him choose who he wants to defend.  I do not teach “leverage pitching” which is when a QB pitches the ball once he feels that the pitch key defender has been out leveraged by the pitch relationship to such an extent that there is NO WAY that that pitch key can successfully tackle the pitch back.  This will result in a pitch every time. I do not want this!  I want all three phases of the triple to be equally effective.  I want to have confidence that my QB is just as good of a runner as the two other runners in the triple. My QB is indeed the field general of this offense.  He needs quick hands, quick  feet and and very quick mind.  He is the bread and butter of the Pistol-Flex offense!
