A Great Gift & Shooting the Elephant in the Room

This past Thursday at our football banquet, Gabby Banks & Morgan Reed gave me one of the nicest gifts I’ve ever received at the end of the season. It was an engraved, framed picture from their appearance on the Scholastic Ball Report. It is already hanging up in my office at home and I am very proud of it.

Gabby & Morgan served as our Administrative Assistants this past season. They were primarily responsible for our social media accounts. But, because of their ability and competence, they quickly took on other responsibilities and represented our program in a variety of ways.  They organized a jersey event for special needs children, handled our game sponsorships, Hog-Dog-Titan recognition, and many more tasks…. and it was all done at a very high level.

I saw recently where an older, successful coach was fired for “failing to adapt.” The elephant in the room for all of us old coaches is our resistance to change. Morgan & Gabby shot that elephant between the eyes for me. They became the modern presence of Titan football while I got to be the old coach.

I remember one night during the season, going for a run and getting ready to listen to my old music. I no longer felt guilty for loving my old music.  I could enjoy my old music because Gabby & Morgan were modern for me. They can put their music on their videos, etc. I can stick with the Four Tops and the Rolling Stones…. who are really even before my time!

Every coach, but especially the old ones like me, need people like Gabby & Morgan to keep their program current and modern. Just like any other staff position, they need to be very good at what they do and of high character. But, they can make a huge and positive impact on your football program.

If any coaches want their job descriptions, email me at david.buchanan@mercer.kyschools.us.

Here is a link to their appearance on the Scholastic Ball Report. I am very proud of these young ladies!  Merry Christmas to the old coaches out there and the young people that are helping them still coach football in the 21st century!
