Drills for Quarterbacks at All Levels Part II

II. Warm-up – Emphasis getting the shoulder and arm loose – stretching and concentrating on all aspects of the throwing motion and developing accuracy.

Set Up:  QB    QB    QB

10 yards distance

QB    QB    QB

1. Bull Pen Pitch – Play catch with partner. Nice and easy warming the shoulder up, working the hips up and over and over-exaggerating the follow through. *From this point on, always throw at a target (partner’s right shoulder, left hip and eyes, etc). Throw the ball with a purpose – work on accuracy.

2.  Feet Apart – Legs spread wide – keep the feet planted on the ground. Emphasize follow through – come down and sweep the grass between your legs.

3. Face Right/Face Left – Keep feet together – toes pointed forward. Emphasize upper body rotation – always check follow through.

4.  Right Knee/Both Knees/Left Knee – Stay balanced, do not fall forward. Emphasize arm strength.                 *Add Find the Handle. Drop the ball on the ground, find the laces quickly and release the ball quickly. Emphasize Arm Strength and Quick Release.

5.  High Release – One line of quarterbacks step forward until they are only 5 yards apart, feet together, facing partner, and hold the ball high above the head with slight bend in the elbow. Throw the ball with only the wrist. Emphasize – feel the ball come off the last two fingers – stretch wrist and forearm.

6.  Fade and Throw – (Fade to the right and throw off the right foot/fade to the right and throw off the left foot/fade to the left and throw off the right foot/fade to the left and throw of the left foot) still only five yards away from partner. Take two or three steps working on throwing off balance. Emphasize dumping the ball off – turning hips – still coming up and over.

7.  Step Through Early – Back up 10 yards apart. Step with the right foot – throw the football and follow through. Emphasize proper method to throw the football on the run.

8. Drops – Quarterbacks will offset and work the following drops:

A) 3 Step Drop

          B) Quick 5 Step Drop

         C) Regular 5 Step Drop

D) Gun/Pistol

E) Full Sprint Out
