My blog last month discussed defending the Big 5 run plays. Putting any new defense or scheme up against those 5 run plays to make sure the defense is sound versus the run and trying to eliminate any issues before gameday.
But what about the pass game? It is a question we have asked ourselves over the last couple of years. The challenege- Could we come up with a Big 5 of pass routes / combinations that we could use as a litmus test versus our coverages?
So we looked through our film from the last couple of years to find the most common routes / combinations we see vs a 2Deep look and a 3Deep look. From there we narrowed it down to the 5 most common vs both looks. What follows are our Big 5 vs. a 2Deep look. It helps us in making sure our pass defense is sound but also helps in the teaching progression of the coverages to our student-athletes. When we put in a 2Deep coverage look these will be the first route combinations we will show them in meetings / practices.
I invite you to do the same with your defensive staff. Take the time in the offseason to got through the pass combinations and see what the Top 5 routes are that offenses are running against your 2Deep looks and your 3Deep looks. Then work it in to your teaching progression with your defense and in your installation.
