“Take A Shot” Bunch Play With Ball On A Hash, Near The Red Zone (+30 to +25)

Bunch-Double Post

If you run ‘Bunch’ or are thinking about installing this formation, then you need to consider this play for when you are on a hash and heading into the red zone (+30 to +25 yard line) as this is the prime area to “take a shot” to score. That is, before a defensive coordinator changes his thought process from a zone coverage to man or a man under look.  This usually occurs for most defenses at or near the +20 yard line.

Note:  Your bunch alignment should be just far enough away from the offensive tackle to not warrant a defensive end lined up over your point man ( the middle WR on the Ball).  This is usually about 5-6 yards from the point man to the OT.

The first diagram will be the Double Post play vs. a 2-High defensive look.

Skill Position Player Rules vs. 2-high:

QB = 3-step drop from Gun, 5-step drop from under center.  Reading progression = Y, X, H, to laying it off to the T.

T = Check protection if applicable.  Angle route working underneath the coverage.

Z = “Take 2”, get the boundary safeties attention by attacking him enough to get him pulled out and away from the Y Receiver.  This will ultimately look like a corner route.

Y = Must take an inside release on the defender that is pressing him or playing directly over the top (If the Y takes an outside release, the play is dead).  Split the safeties by running right through the middle of where they are aligned.

X = Take a direct course to 10 yards deep on the field hash.  Stick foot in ground and break a post route once landmark is achieved, running to open area or “green grass”.

H = Run arrow route, coming underneath the Y and X Receivers. Once near the numbers on the field turn up and get vertical on outside vertical landmark (bottom of field numbers).

The next diagram will be the Double Post play vs. a 1-High Safety look.

Position Player Rules vs. 1-High:

QB = 3-step drop from Gun, 5-step from under center.  Reading progression = X, H, to laying it off to the T.

T = Check protection if applicable.  Angle route working underneath the coverage.

Z = “Clear the deep defender”, get the corner occupied and turn to the outside running him off.

Y = Must take an inside release on the defender that is pressing him or playing directly over the top (If the Y takes an outside release, the play is dead).  Run directly to the far shoulder or “boundary shoulder” of the free safety and get him occupied and turned away from the route of the X by pulling him “out and away”.

X = Take a direct course to 10 yards deep on the field hash.  Stick foot in ground and break a post route once landmark is achieved running to open area or “green grass”.

H = Run arrow route, coming underneath the Y and X Receivers. Once near the numbers on the field turn up and get vertical on outside vertical landmark (bottom of field numbers).

In the next blog I will talk about a great compliment to the Bunch-Double Post that can be run when the defense is dropping 7 or 8 defenders and taking away all of the “deep” routes.  This compliment can be run almost anywhere on the field as long as the ball is on a hash.
