Linebacker Fundamentals – Day 3

On day 1 we taught the fundamentals of linebacker play. In building a base, we stressed playing great technique (stance, read steps, playing low, angles), reading the triangle, reacting to flow for run or pass, gap responsibilities, option responsibilities and pass drops. Day 2 was a repetition of Day 1. On day 3 we will begin evaluating the linebackers to see who will fit best into our defense.

The following traits are what I look for in a linebacker:

Attitude

We want to destroy our opponents by pursuing the ball in a rage, holding them to zero points and zero yards. Take it personal if our opponents gain one yard and especially if they score. I want linebackers with this attitude that can lead the rest of the defense to play hard and mostly develop that mentality of being the best defense in the nation at any level.

Effort

You can overcome athletic talent by great effort. I want players who want to prepare and work hard at everything they attempt from off-season training to in-season. Complainers will be written off and cut. I expect our linebackers to play their best not only in games, but also in practice. Those who give it their all in drills and especially hustling in between drills gain my respect. It takes zero talent to give your all. Practice with intensity! You play like you practice and I sure do not want players on our defense who do not give it 100%.

Explosion

Football is a game of impact. You train lifting weights to not only get stronger, but to prepare your body to deliver hits and to absorb hits. I want our linebackers to play with a center of gravity and when they come out of their stances, they can explode into the blocker striking them with power and shedding them on their way to the ball carrier.

Quickness

The higher you go in this game, the bigger and faster your opponents become. You have to play with quick feet and fast legs. You need to out-quick the big fatties upfront on your way to the ball. If you can avoid contact on your way to the ball, you will be able to play for a longer period of time. Being quick will help you to obtain longevity.

Fluidity

You cannot play the game of football being stiff (especially in the hips). You must be as flexible as possible in being able to bend. The lowest man always wins and fluidity comes into play in every aspect of the game. When you get rolled up on in a pile, you need to be as fluid as possible to prevent injury. Fluidity will help you in your change of direction, speed and quickness.
