There is a significant amount of information available to coaches regarding “what to do” in certain game situations while running the triple option scheme. Of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and what works for one coach may not work for another. However, having said that, it is my opinion that if a coach has complete confidence in his offense, he will be willing to run it come hell or high water! Simply put: we think we can run our offense better than your defense can stop it! One very popular opinion about how to run the triple option is this: if the play called is triple option right (12) but the defense has a 3-tech D-Lineman to the play side, you should audible into the Midline (2) instead. I do not agree with this. You have effectively allowed the defense to dictate what you can and cannot run. Having said that, I am not saying that I would not change the play if I truly felt that we could not be successful with the original play call. However, I would not be at all nervous about running triple vs a 3-tech. After all, football comes down to two things: blocking and tackling. It is up to the coaches to coach the O-linemen up to such an extent that they have the confidence to take on the 3-tech. If we allow a defense to dictate what we can run, then the next thing you may find is that they have gone to double 3-tech D-linemen…what do you do now?
Have faith in your coaches and players to run the offense that they have perfected!
