The Nickel pass protection is a six man protection scheme. The “Nickel” call is made by the Center. The F-Back then makes a Roger/Louie call (that is a right or left call). The Center then points out who the “Mike” is. The Mike is the player that has been designated as the 2nd level defender that the O-Line has decided to be responsible for. The F-back now knows that he is responsible for the defender(s) who is/are towards his called side from that MIKE defender. Diagram 1 shows a Nickel pass protection call with a Louie tag. The Center has designated the outside LB as the “Mike”. The O-line is therefore responsible for the four down linemen AND that MIKE defender. The F-Back is responsible for the Middle LB to the outside LB to his side (Louie=Left).
