It is my belief that it is far better to teach your offensive players a very limited number of plays and have them all MASTER those few plays then it is to hand them a huge playbook and tell them to learn all the plays within its contents. Why not be VERY good at something rather than be just average at many things?
This philosophy is at the heart of the Pistol-Flex offense. A grand total of 12 plays comprise the entire offense. The base play is our Veer triple option. Every other play, both running and passing, feeds off of this one key play! We are a triple option team and very proud of that fact. We are all Masters of our trade. We refuse to be a “Jack-of-all-plays”, rather, we would prefer to be “Masters-of-a-few-plays”.
In other words: become GREAT at a few basic plays and know that your players are far better at running those plays than the defense is at stopping those plays. Remember, after repping the base plays hundreds of times, would it not logically follow that we should be able to execute those plays flawlessly? Above all, always keep things as simple as possible.
