WHY RUN THE PISTOL-FLEX? HERE ARE FIVE REASONS

1) On most run plays, the QB is able to “read” a defender instead of us having to block him.  This is a tremendous advantage since the players who would normally have to block the read key defender, can now get up to the second level of defenders and perform their blocks.  This is simply a numbers game!  Due to the use of the read, we now have a mathematical advantage at the point of attack.

2) QB is in a “pistol” set four yards behind the Center.  This will give the QB a “better” read on his read key defenders.  This is due solely to the QB’s position in relation to the line of scrimmage.  Since the QB is farther away from his read keys, he is able to get a better angle of the track that the read keys are attacking on.  In addition, because the QB is four yards from the line of scrimmage, he will also have a panoramic view of the defense that is set before him.  This enables him to make better pre-snap reads.

3) This offense does not require the biggest or strongest athletes in order for it to be successful.  Instead, the undersized athlete (even for linemen) will flourish in this offense.  Quickness, endurance and fundamentally sound play is what is required in order to play in this style of offense.

4) The Pistol-Flex in the ultimate TEAM offense.  If a coach truly wants his team to “bond” as one cohesive unit, this offensive philosophy is for them.  Each offensive player is like a cog in the wheel of a wagon.  If one cog “breaks” (does not perform his assignment), then the wheel becomes weak and vulnerable.  This could be the difference between a TD or a loss of yardage play.  All  members on this offense are truly needed to perform their assignments.

5) In this offense, your QB will be one of your best athletes.  This is a tremendous strategic advantage for the offense in my opinion.  If your QB is ever in danger of getting tackled as the play breaks down, BECAUSE he is a great athlete, this will automatically give him the tools to make something out of nothing!   In other words, by putting the ball into the hands of one of your best athletes each and every play, something good could happen due to his great athletic ability.
