Character Matters Timeout: Stay Balanced

In order to have a well-functioning unit, it is always necessary to maintain balance. All parts working in unison. The same goes for sports. The foundation for any sport skill is that of “being in balance.”

From a football lineman, to a shortstop, to a golfer, a successful athlete must be and stay in balance in order to accurately complete their skill. This allows them to “do their skill the right way.”

As a coach, one must ask not only their players but themselves, “Am I in balance? Am I
ready to do what is right?”

Balance is defined as a “state of equilibrium, to bring into harmony; steadiness.” Having a balanced team brings completion to the players as individuals and as a whole. The key is completion.

When a team or player is out of balance, it leads to poor production. It leads to
doing the wrong things. When thinking about what it is to “be in balance,” you have to also ask yourself: “Balanced in what areas?”

Balanced people in general and athletes in particular are balanced in Mind, Body, Spirit, and Social areas. When all of these areas are in equilibrium, the stage is set for
performance excellence.

As a coach, your team must be ready to do what is right. A balanced mindset is steady, poised, stable and healthy. All of which lead to a readiness to do what is right. Be ready.

BALANCE = “Be strong and courageous; be on guard; stand firm in faith; do everything in love.”
