FOUR VERTICALS

The Pistol-Flex triple option is a run-oriented offensive scheme.  However, when the defense starts to bring 8 in the tackle box (see diagram), it is time to send four WRs down the field to stress the defense (and especially that Free Safety).  Sending four receivers down the seams will at the very worst, allow your players to take advantage of man coverage!  It is now up to your receivers to “make the big play” with a DB on their back.  The protection scheme is 6-man.  The B-back will call out a Roger/Louie call.  In this case, a Roger call was made which tells the O-line that the B-back has the right side of the 2nd level defenders.  The center now calls out the # of the “mike”…..in this case, the O-line is now responsible for the 4-down PLUS the “mike”.  The 8th player in the box is now the responsibility of the QB (if he should blitz).  The 4-wide receivers hit the seams as they take their men down field.  At ANY time during their route, the QB may be throwing to them if they are open.  So, this play is not necessarily one that has the QB wait until the WRs are 20 yards down field.  Great play to make the defense pay!
