No coach on offense ever enjoys seeing their team fumble the ball. With that said, ball security is even more important in an offense such as the Pistol-Flex. This is because the PF is built upon the “run-first” philosophy so the importance of holding onto the pigskin is magnified 100 fold! Running the ball, no matter what down it is, is a very good possibility within the greater PF Offense. If, due to fumbles, the running game is taken out of the equation, then the PF offense will resemble a wounded duck! Mike Leach’s high powered, pass happy offense is no different, in that if his team starts to throw picks, their offense will also be in deep trouble. However, having said that, I personally do not fear this scenario happening to my PF team. Why? Just like we rep our 12 plays over and over again until we become experts at executing them, so too do we practice ball security EVERY DAY! No exceptions. We will hold onto that ball. We will not hurt our team by haphazardly holding that ball. We will simply make ball security one of our utmost priorities both in practice, and in games!
